Stress is common in our fast-paced, multi-tasking, and distracted lives. According to Statistics Canada, one in four Canadians report daily stress levels in the high to severe range. It seems that being a citizen of the modern world almost requires us to be stressed and overly busy, both in our personal lives and at work. What we may not be considering is the true cost of this way of living to our physical and mental health, as well as our relationships and quality of life. The physiology of stressful emotions is linked to abnormal hormonal regulation, increased body fat, high blood pressure, heart disease, smoking, sleep problems, decreased cognitive function, depression and anxiety. Besides the effects on individuals, stress also has an enormous impact on businesses, costing industry a staggering 10 per cent of its annual profits.
